Background of the Study
Climate change has emerged as a global challenge, compelling households to adopt various adaptation strategies to mitigate its adverse impacts. In Ikwerre Local Government Area, Rivers State, shifting weather patterns, rising temperatures, and unpredictable rainfall have significantly affected agricultural practices, water resources, and overall household well-being (Okoro, 2023). Local communities have begun to implement innovative measures such as diversified farming, water conservation techniques, and the use of alternative energy sources to cope with climate uncertainties (Eze, 2024). Despite these efforts, the effectiveness and sustainability of these adaptations remain unclear, particularly in the context of limited resources and inadequate governmental support (Uche, 2025). This study seeks to document and critically analyze the adaptation strategies employed by households in Ikwerre, exploring how cultural, economic, and social factors influence their choice of measures. By integrating local knowledge with scientific insights, the research aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of household resilience in the face of climate change, while also suggesting policy interventions to support effective adaptation strategies (Okoro, 2023).

Statement of the Problem
Households in Ikwerre face significant challenges due to climate change, resulting in disrupted agricultural practices, water shortages, and increased vulnerability to extreme weather events. Although various adaptation strategies have been adopted, their effectiveness is hampered by limited financial and technical support (Eze, 2024). This study seeks to identify the barriers to successful adaptation and to evaluate the extent to which current strategies mitigate climate risks, emphasizing the need for enhanced policy support and resource allocation (Uche, 2025).

Objectives of the Study:

To document household adaptation strategies to climate change in Ikwerre.

To assess the effectiveness of these strategies in mitigating climate impacts.

To recommend policy measures that enhance household resilience.

Research Questions:

What adaptation strategies are being employed by households in Ikwerre?

How effective are these strategies in reducing climate-related risks?

What policy interventions can improve household resilience?

Research Hypotheses:

H1: Household adaptation strategies vary significantly based on socio-economic status.

H2: Current adaptation measures are insufficient to fully mitigate climate impacts.

H3: Enhanced policy support will improve the effectiveness of household adaptation.

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides an in-depth analysis of household adaptation strategies in the face of climate change. The findings will aid policymakers and development agencies in crafting targeted interventions that bolster community resilience, ensuring sustainable living conditions in Ikwerre Local Government Area (Okoro, 2023; Uche, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to household adaptation strategies to climate change in Ikwerre Local Government Area, Rivers State. The study does not extend to institutional or industrial adaptation practices.

Definitions of Terms:

Climate Change: Long-term alterations in temperature, precipitation, and weather patterns.

Adaptation Strategies: Actions undertaken by households to minimize the adverse impacts of climate change.

Resilience: The ability of a system or community to recover from environmental disturbances.
